Enabling Efficiency for High-Caseload Therapists

OVERVIEW
This project explores the development of a mental health monitoring dashboard designed to support therapists in tracking patient progress between sessions.
Goal
Integrate AI insights, implement user-friendly data visualization, & redesign a structured interface to enhance clinical preparation sessions.
Result
Prioritizing efficiency and accessibility, the dashboard enables therapists to provide more personalized and data-driven care.

RESEARCH
Coffee Chats With The Experts
Method
6 semi-structured interviews
Understanding therapists' needs was a crucial first step. I conducted interviews to explore how they use existing tools and track patient progress. This provided insights into workflow pain points, data interpretation challenges, and the potential for AI-assisted analysis.

RESEARCH
Needs In The Weeds
Method
Thematic Analysis + Affinity Mapping
By exploring therapist workflows, I identified core pain points in existing mental health tracking systems. Many therapists relied on manual notes or fragmented tools, leading to inconsistencies in retained information.
The affinity mapping structured the qualitative insights gathered and the thematic analysis helped define essential dashboard features.

Progress Makes Perfect
Method
Usability Testing
Through multiple rounds of testing and refinement, I improved the dashboard’s data visualization, AI-powered insights, and user interface elements.
Risk indications, word summaries, and real-time analytics were introduced to provide a clearer overview of patient progress. Therapists validated these updates during usability testing sessions.

DELIVERABLES
Final Tool Design
The final dashboard design integrates a structured, user-friendly interface that supports real-time patient tracking and utilization of AI insights. This solution highlights the power of user-centered design in enhancing mental health support systems.
Glanceability
First, compact and efficient visual elements were prioritized to support comprehension at a glance. The dashboard was structured to display only the most essential patient data: emotional arousal, blink rate, facial expressions, and patient sentiment. To prevent redundancy, the interface focuses on momentary check-ins rather than duplicating all information found in existing medical records elsewhere.
Inclusive Design
Embedded inclusive design elements, such as fields for preferred gender pronouns and patient triggers, reflect a broader mental health-informed perspective. These actionable design choices allow the final dashboard to deliver necessary insights intuitively, while maintaining an empathetic approach to patient care.
Co-Design
Weekly design collaborations with developers and therapists allowed for consistent tracking of both feasibility and usability. The importance of user-centered design led to actionable improvements like incorporating symbolic representations, adding iconography, and enhancing visual hierarchy for faster glanceability and reduced cognitive load.
